Handicapped Athletes Learning to Enjoy Riding

On Friday, May 13, 2005 at a press conference held at the main entrance of the South Carolina School for the Deaf and Blind, Tom Adams, H.A.L.T.E.R. Chairman, and Dr. Sheila Breitweiser, President of SCSDB, announced a new joint collaboration. SCSDB has entered into a 30-year lease agreement that will allow H.A.L.T.E.R. to build an equestrian facility on 21 acres owned by the school. Initial plans (Phase I) involves the clearing, grassing and fencing of the land and construction of riding ring. Phase II will be the construction of an indoor riding arena. H.A.L.T.E.R. hopes individuals from the community will step forward with generous offerings to help make this dream come true.

You never can dream too small! Below is an architect's drawing of the future facility.

This new facility will help H.A.L.T.E.R. reach out to more of the handicapped persons who live in the surrounding communities as well make therapeutic riding more accessible for the children of SCSDB. This new facility will put SCSDB a step closer to establishing a vocational program for SCSDB students seeking employment at equestrian facilities after graduation.
