Handicapped Athletes Learning to Enjoy Riding

FAQs

Q: Which handicapped persons are eligible to participate in the H.A.L.T.E.R. program?
Any handicapped person is welcome to participate in H.A.L.T.E.R.'s Therapeutic Riding Program provided they have their physician's consent. H.A.L.T.E.R. has physician's form(s) that must be completed and signed by the doctor prior to engaging in the H.A.L.T.E.R. program each year. Additionally, the riders, their parent(s), or guardian(s) must sign liability release forms and photo release forms. H.A.L.T.E.R. reserves the right to refuse riding privileges if there are concerns about the rider's physical ability to participate in the program or because of safety or behavioral issues.

Q: What is the cost to participate in the program?
A five-week session costs $25.00. This includes approximately 20 minutes riding each Saturday during the session. Those riders not wanting to pay for a full session will be charged a fee of $5.00 for each Saturday morning they desire to participate. Reservations are required to ensure adequate scheduling of volunteers and riders. Limited low-income scholarships are available.

Q: Who is eligible to be a volunteer?
Any mature-minded individual of good character and willing to follow the Program Director's instructions is welcome to inquire about being a volunteer. Current H.A.L.T.E.R. volunteers are willing to train new volunteers! Any volunteer working directly with clients must be 15 years or older. Anyone younger who desires to help can work with the Pony Pals group. Pony Pals groom and care for the horses between riders.

Q: What is the Pony Pals group?
Pony Pals is a group for volunteers 10 to 14 years of age. They cannot help in the arena but can groom, tack and assist with the horses outside the arena. They must attend a volunteer training session and follow all other volunteer requirements.
